Agenda for open spaces
From Web2forDev
La version française suit si-dessous
The event's programme will include sessions where participants and speakers can meet and discuss on the basis of their own selected agenda within the framework of the Conference theme and topics. Each day, the programme will include a block of afternoon sessions (60-75 minutes each) on the main topics, which are:
- Shared virtual spaces, remote collaboration and knowledge sharing
- Appropriate technologies for online publishing
- Online Information retrieval and access
The Open spaces provide speakers and participants an opportunity to meet and discuss the topics and issues they have something to share about. These may be specific topics they have experience with, some issues arisen during the Conference. They may discuss presentations, give interactive poster presentations, run extra tutorials on tools and methodologies, provide more examples of projects in the making. Participants may also want to use the open spaces as incubator sessions or peer assists to brainstorm projects, issues, and processes that are being addressed with usual tools but would benefit from the adoption of Web 2.0. Application providers, project managers and participants with real-life projects who seek to better define requirements, strategies and find solutions could benefit from this more focused type of open space session.
The projects and approach are defined by participants and speakers, the conference staff will provide support with the booking of rooms and equipment. Three types of room options are available for the open spaces:
- Large room with projector and wireless access (70 people maximum)
- Small room without projector and wireless access (25 people maximum)
- Areas for more informal knowledge sharing (no maximum)
The open space agenda will be developed through the wiki.
* If you are a participant and feel you have something to share about one of the conference topics, list some specific examples, concepts, issues in one or more of the main topics (Shared virtual spaces; Appropriate technologies ; Knowledge sharing for the research community). For example: issues you have struggled with, which you would want to see covered in the open spaces * Include your name and contact details next to your suggested specific examples, concepts, issues * No simultaneous translation will be provided during the open spaces so please also include the language that will be used in your session on the wiki * Please provide the type of room you will need and the estimated time of your session
Please scroll down past the French version to input your session.
- Espaces virtuels, collaboration et échange des connaissances à distance;
- Outils appropriés à la publication en ligne;

1) Facebook and development work http://developers.facebook.com/
While i don't have any experience building applications around Facebook, the idea of using this very popular albeit commercial application in the development sphere is powerful. It certainly seems sustainable, has wide appeal but has privacy concerns. One possible outcome would be for the development community join forces to create a substitute- like with dgroups, (or using the foundations of dgroups...) another would be to use facebook directly. Could be broken down into multiple sessions - users, decision makers, developers. Room needed: Will depend on the interest Language: English but could support French as required.

2) Web 2.0 Taster' Continued' I want to suggest continuing the practical demo/showcase approach of the pre-conference Web 2.0 Taster Day throughout the Open Spaces. Having a continuous corner/slot of the Open Space 'space' to continue discussions that arose on the pre-conference day, for conference participants to come back to tools they want to look at practically, or to be guided in hands-on fashion in setting up a blog, or mashing a their blog with online video, RSS etc., would provide us with an opportunity to further 'thread' the practical learning together approach around technology. It could provide a recognizable space for people to come with technology-related questions, or demonstrations.

3) Data mashing laboratory
One of the recommendations to UK government in the report 'Power of Information' http://www.cabinetoffice.gov.uk/newsroom/news_releases/2007/070625_info_res.asp was that UK government establish a laboratory to research ways of sharing government generated information. Could a virtual data mashing laboratory be established for development, perhaps one focused on some particular aim, even a big one - MDGs perhaps.

4) Capacity building in local actors
What about a space to share approaches to capacity building of local actors to use these tools. We have identified 3 key processes using web 2.0 in Bolivia: i)Identifying promoters and working with them to ensure their actions have legitimacy and relevance within their Organisations, ii) Step by step guide to content development to support with systematisation of experiences iii) Creating a sense of online community using simple social network tools to increase visibility of information exchanges. Am sure there will be a wealth of other experiences in a variety of contexts, would like to know how other projects are approaching this.

5) Forerunners in the organization - Learning from experiments, getting all on board
In most organizations, there will be a few forerunners: those that embrace new technologies, and need no further incentives to experiment with them. On the other hand, others get confused by all these new developments, and develop a reluctance to use these new tools.
Issues to discuss are:
- How to 'channel' the experiments, in order to document the experiences and learn from them as an organization, without demotivating the forerunners with all kinds of procedures.
- How to get all relevant people involved and use these tools?

Appropriate technologies for on-line publishing / Outils appropriés à la publication en ligne
On-line Information retrieval and access / Recherche et accès à l’information en ligne
1) Designing pathways to connect soil health researchers in Africa with knowledge resources
2) Agrifeeds demo: Aggregated News and Events on Agriculture
For the participatory web to be a success it must be accessible over low bandwidths. Come and find out how to do it!
We also present an experimental mashup between the successful HINARI journals access program, a web search engine and the del.icio.us social bookmarking service. It shows how "web 2.0 tools" and in particular the concept of an API can enhance an already widely used service by offering significant usability improvements.
We propose that usability and low bandwidth accessibility should remain high on the agenda as new, more complex, web services are developed. We invite participants to view our freely available web design guidelines and to come and see our mashup in action and share your thoughts.
