Democracy walls

Democracy walls are open spaces where people can post their ideas and opinions using metacards (one idea per card). A democracy wall typically consists of five large sheets of craft paper each one with a different heading: I discovered that ...; I noticed that…; I felt that…; I learnt that …”; “I would like to suggest…”

Democracy walls featuring multilingual headings (English, French and Spanish) were set up during the Web 2.0 taster day and throughout the conference to gather feedback, observations, comments and inputs from participants. Participants wrote their observations, reactions, ideas, or emotions on cards and posted these on the walls.

Statements displayed on the walls were analysed in the evenings and key issues raised were shared with the audience the day after.

During the Web2forDev conference the democracy walls offered on one hand the participants the opportunity to share their views and opinions privately, without the need to speak out in public; and on the other hand served the organisers to get the pulse of the event and adjust accordingly. In addition the statements featured on the democracy walls were presented at the closing session and offered further food for thoughts, reactions and comments on future directions.
